Dr Michael Hogden

MBBS (Honours) BSc FRANZCO DAO

Dr Michael Hogden is an Ophthalmologist and Vitreo-retinal surgeon with subspecialty training in retinal and macular diseases.

Dr Hogden was raised in Townsville and attended boarding school in Brisbane, before studying Medicine in Sydney at the University of New South Wales, where he graduated with First Class Honours in 2004.

Dr Hogden completed his specialist Ophthalmic training in Queensland, including a year as Senior Registrar at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, before undertaking further subspecialty fellowship training in medical retina and vitreoretinal surgery at the Oxford Eye Hospital and Bristol Eye Hospital, respectively.

He was then awarded the RANZCO Overseas Scholarship to pursue additional international retinal training at Vitreous Retina Macula Consultants of New York, and the Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute at Columbia University in New York.

Dr Michael Hogden’s clinical interests include:

• Retinal surgery, such as retinal detachments

• Macular surgery, such as macular holes, epiretinal membranes/macular pucker

• Age-related macular degeneration management

• Diabetic eye disease, such as diabetic retinopathy and diabetic maculopathy

• Retinal vein occlusions

• Inherited retinal diseases, such as retinitis pigmentosa and Stargardt’s disease

• Complex cataract surgery where vitreo-retinal intervention and/or a sutured intraocular lens (IOL) may be required, such as in pseudo-exfoliation syndrome (PXF) or trauma

Besides his clinical work, Dr Hogden enjoys teaching and training the Vitreoretinal Fellows, Ophthalmology Registrars and medical students, and continue to be involved in ophthalmic research.

In his spare time, he enjoys exploring regional and remote Australia and relaxing at the beach with his family.

Dr Sing-Pey Chow

MBBS (Honours) BMedSc FRANZCO

Dr Chow is an Ophthalmologist with a special interest in cataract surgery and corneal diseases. She enjoys providing evidence-based care to her patients in a down-to-earth manner.

Dr Chow graduated from medical school at the University of Melbourne with Honours in 2006 before completing her specialty Ophthalmology training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne.  She then completed another three years of subspecialty training in corneal and anterior segment diseases at Bristol Eye Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital in the United Kingdom, before returning to Australia via an observership at the Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute at Columbia University in New York.

Dr Chow has published as first author in peer-reviewed journals such as Ophthalmology, Cornea and British Journal of Ophthalmology, and sit on the Research Advisory Committee of the Ophthalmic Research Institute of Australia (ORIA).

She has presented at international conferences, including the World Cornea Congress, American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), and Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) meetings, for which she was awarded an ARVO International Travel Grant in 2016.

Dr Chow is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) and a member of the Cornea Society. She is also a visiting Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, and enjoys teaching the next generation of Ophthalmologists as a member of the RANZCO Board of Examiners.

Dr Chow’s clinical interests include:

• Cataract surgery with implantation of intraocular lens options that are tailored to each patient’s lifestyle and visual needs, including multi-focal, extended depth of vision (EDOF) lenses and mono-vision in selected patients

• Pterygium surgery with conjunctival autograft to minimise recurrence

• Ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) and its medical and surgical management

• Keratoconus, with corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) for progressive cases

Outside of work, Dr Chow can often be found at various playgrounds with her three young children.

Dr Kate Hogden

BSc MBBS FRANZCO

Dr Kate Hogden practices comprehensive Ophthalmology with sub-specialty interests in glaucoma and cataract surgery.

Dr Hogden completed her Medical degree at the University of Queensland before moving to Sydney to undertake Ophthalmology training at the Sydney Eye Hospital.  She then completed subspecialty training in Glaucoma at the surgically renowned University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver, Canada for which she was awarded a RANZCO Topham Scholarship.  Whilst at UBC, Dr Hogden also spent time with the prestigious Vitreoretinal department gaining invaluable medical and surgical retina experience.

Dr Hogden holds a public appointment at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and is involved in Registrar teaching.  She is actively involved in ongoing clinical research and has presented at a number of Australian and international Ophthalmology conferences.  

Dr Kate Hogden’s clinical interests include:

• Glaucoma laser procedures, such as Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)

• Traditional glaucoma surgeries, including trabeculectomy and glaucoma drainage devices (sometimes known as ‘tubes’)

• Minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS)

• Cataract surgery with implantation of intraocular lens
